2月から3月にかけてボリビアに行く用事があったので、ポトシ県のウユニ湖の近くにある、「列車の墓場」に行ってきました。

In February and March 2015, I had something to do in Bolivia and stayed one month there. I visited a strange place located near to Uyuni salt flats in Potosi province known as "Train Cemetery".


この「列車の墓場」は、ウユニ市から出るウユニ湖ツアーのコースに組み込まれていますので、ウユニ湖に行ったことのある人はほぼ全員ここも訪問しているのではないかと思いますが、ウユニ湖ツアーの前座という扱いですので、それほど長居できるわけではありません。私の時は滞在時間は15分程度でした。まあ、鉄道マニア以外の人にはそれで十分だろうと思います。

現場に行くまで具体的にどんな機関車があるのかよく知らなかったのですが、ガーラット式機関車の残骸もありました。ガーラット式の機関車というとアフリカあたりで多用されていたことが有名だと思いますが、南米でも使われていたのですね。

ところでガーラット式の機関車というと、最近オーストラリアでマニアが復活させたそうです。
Project 6029というプロジェクトのようですが、2015年の3月にFestival Of Steam 2015というイベントで運行されています。キャンベラのあたりで運行されたようですが、こちらも是非訪問したいところです。

This "Train Cemetery" is one of the destination of one-day tour to Uyuni salt flats. Most of the tourists who have visited Uyuni also have visited here. Since visitation to here is not the main destination of the tour, most of the tours spend not so long time here. In my case, we stayed here only 15 minutes. However, it will be enough for most of the ordinary tourists who are not train freaks.

I didn't have so much information about here before I visited. I found some wrecks of Garrat type locomotives. I heard that Garrat type locomotives were mainly used in Africa but they were used in South America, too.

Meanwhile, recently a Garrat type locomotive was revived in Australia. Project 6029 had "Festival Of Steam 2015" operated the locomotive around Canberra. I hope to visit it someday.

こちらがガーラット式機関車の残骸です。(The Garratt Locomotive とか、The International Steam Pagesによると、どうもBayer Peacock社製の7421か7425らしいです。最近オーストラリアで復活した6029に似ていますね。)
