2014年3月に、最後の東北夜行である寝台特急「あけぼの」が廃止されましたが、その後を追うように、2015年の3月で北斗星、トワイライトエクスプレスが廃止されます。

December 2014 and February 2015

In March 2014, the last blue train in North East region in Japan, "Akebono" was taken off. In March 2015, the last blue trains in Japan, "Hokutosei" and "Twilight Express" are going to be taken off, too.

学生時代を札幌で過ごしたこともあり、北斗星・トワイライトエクスプレスはなじみ深い列車なのですが、特に北斗星は東京に帰省するのに時々使っており、また、大学受験の際にも往路で利用したので非常に思い入れのある列車でした。社会人になってからも、業務で北海道に行く際には無理矢理利用したりもしたのですが、なかなか都合が合わず、あまり利用することはできませんでした。

北斗星に関しては、往時は3往復も運行されており、実は大学受験で利用した際には、1号に乗る予定だったのが、切符を忘れて家に取りに戻ったために乗り遅れて、上野駅で3号の切符に取り替えてもらったということがありました。このときは本当にギリギリで間に合わず、上野駅の地上ホームで走り去る北斗星1号を呆然と見送ったのですが、すぐに気を取り直して、よし、新幹線で追いかけよう、と、大急ぎでみどりの窓口に向かったのでした。窓口では、「今出てった北斗星を追いかけたいんで、すぐに出るやまびこを宇都宮までください。」という調子で切符を買おうとしたところ、「次の北斗星じゃダメなの？」という予想外の提案をいただき、3号の切符に振り替えてもらえたのでした。もう20年も前の話になりますが、まだまだおおらかな時代でした。

北斗星の廃止で、いわゆる全車両客車寝台車の、いわゆる「ブルートレイン」は定期列車としては消滅することになります。あとは本州・北海道連絡の夜行列車としては「カシオペア」と「はまなす」が残りますが、「はまなす」の先が長くないことは誰の目にも明らかですし、「カシオペア」も現在のような形で東京～札幌の不定期列車という形で残るかどうかは不明です。

これも時代の流れで仕方がないことなのでしょうが、全く残念なことです。

12月に、北斗星、トワイライトエクスプレスの3月の廃止が確定してから、12月下旬、2月下旬と2回ほど渡道し、最後の積雪期の両列車の雄姿を写真に収めてきたのですが、残念だったのが、今年は暖冬で積雪が少なかったことと、時間の都合で今回のダイヤ改正で同じように引退する711系を目にすることが出来なかったことです。

北斗星、トワイライトエクスプレスが冬季に走ることはもうありませんが、カシオペアはまだ残りますので、引き続きDD51が牽引するのであれば、もしかすると来期もまた渡道するかもしれません。

Since I studied at Hokkaido University at Sapporo city, I used Hokutosei and Twilight Express sometimes. Especially when I come back to my parents house at Tokyo, I sometimes took Hokutosei. When I went to Sapporo first time for the entrance examination of the university, I also took Hokutosei. After I start working at Tokyo, when I have some work at Hokkaido, I tried to take Hokutosei,.however, I couldn't take Hokutosei so often.

In the golden age of Hokutosei, there were three services everyday (Hokutosei 1-6: 1, 3, 5 are from Tokyo to Sapporo, 2, 4, 6 are from Sapporo to Tokyo). When I went to Sapporo for the entrance examination of the university, I forgot to bring the ticket and went back home to take it. In the result, I missed the Hokutosei 1. At that time, I could see the Hokutosei 1 leaving Ueno station at the station. Immediately I decided to purchase the Hokutosei 1 by Shinkansen and went to the ticket office. At the counter, I aske the clerk to sell the ticket of Shinkansen (Yamabiko) which can arrive at Utsunomiya before the Hokutosei 1. Fortunately the clerk said "why don't you take the Hokutosei 3?" and he changed my ticket to Hokutosei 3. It was the story in 20 years ago.

Genuine blue trains operated regularly disappear after Hokutosei stops operation on 14 March 2015. The definition of genuine blue train is:  all the passenger cars are colored blue; locomotives pull the passenger cars; all the passengers cars are sleepers. "Hamanasu (Aomori - Sapporo)" and "Cassiopeia (Ueno - Sapporo)" still continue operation after 14 March 2015. It is no wonder that Hamanasu will retire soon. Cassiopeia will change the route and frequency due to the new Hokkaido Shinkansen.

It is unavoidable but I feel very sorry.

In December 2014, the taking-off of Hokutosei and Twilight Express was announced, I went to Hokkaido twice in December and February to take the pics of both of the trains running in snow. Unfortunately, the snow in Hokkaido in this winter is not so much and I couldn't see Type 711, the first electric train in Hokkaido which also retire in March 2015 due to the lack of time.

Hokutosei and Twilight Express will never run in winter season but Cassiopeia still run next season. If Type DD51 diesel locomotives still pull the train, I might go to Hokkaido in 2016 again.
